Checking Progress Toward Compliance

You can check your progress at any time by logging into your Sports Connect account. Once you're logged in, click "Volunteer" in the menu to see the status of your requirements.

Requirements one through six apply to all adult volunteers. The Coach License (7) and Referee Grade (8) are only for coaches and referees. Youth volunteers are exempt from the Background Check, Live Scan Fingerprinting, and SafeSport Trained Course." This consolidated explanation is easier to follow.

The first requirement is your Risk Status, also referred to as your Background Check. This is currently being managed by our partner Sterling Volunteers. The background check needs to be renewed every year.

The second requirement is Concussion Awareness. You can find this training in AYSOU under the "Safe Haven" category. Your status will update automatically one to two hours after you complete the training, so there is no need to upload a certificate.

The third requirement is only applicable in California. This is Live Scan fingerprinting. Regions will either issue vouchers that can be used at local Live Scan locations, or will host a Live Scan event, generally at volunteer meetings. This is different from the background check which is the first requirement. Live Scan only needs to be completed once per volunteer. Live Scan completed for other organizations cannot be used by AYSO for your privacy.

The fourth requirement is Sudden Cardiac Arrest. You can find this training in AYSOU under the Safehaven category and is currently referred to as “Simon’s Heart”. Your status will update automatically one to two hours after you complete the training, so there is no need to upload a certificate.

The fifth requirement is AYSOs Safe Haven. You can find this training in AYSOU under the "Safe Haven" category. Your status will update automatically one to two hours after you complete the training, so there is no need to upload a certificate.

The sixth requirement is SafeSport Trained, which is a Nationally mandated child abuse prevention training hosted by the US Center for SafeSport. The appropriate training is called “SafeSport Trained”. Regions will not accept the other trainings completed here, such as “SafeSport for Parents”. You can learn how to access the SafeSport Trained courses here. The SafeSport trained course is 90 minutes long and is good for 15 months. Each 12-15 months for the next three years, you are required to take a 30 minute refresher course by accessing the website. You will be asked to create an account, but look for the login page instead. After completing “Refresher Three”, you will be required to take the full 90 minute course again. The completion status for SafeSport will automatically update in your volunteer profile as long as the account you created for SafeSport uses the same name as you used to create your Sports Connect Account (i.e., your legal name) and the same email address.

The seventh requirement is for coaches, both Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches. Please see “Education Pathway” on this page to determine which coach certification you need.

The eighth requirement is for referees. Please refer to this page for more information.
