Renewing and Updating your Background Check

This only applies if you are already an existing volunteer in AYSO. If you are a new volunteer, you need to create an account first and register as a volunteer.

Please note the following:

  • If you plan to remain in AYSO, it is crucial to have your background check up to date.
  • A background check must be done every year.
  • You can renew your background check up to 90 days prior to the expiration date.
  • You will receive a reminder 30 days in advance before your background check expires.
  • Failure to renew your background check before the expiration date will affect your eligibility to volunteer as well as your Instructor, Region, and/or Area access on AYSOU (if applicable).

Below is an example of an email you should receive 30 days before your background check expires. This email may end up in your spam/junk folder.

If you are planning to return as a volunteer, please follow the next steps on how to renew your background check:

1. Sports Connect Regions: Log in to your Region's Sports Connect website where you registered to volunteer. inLeague Regions: Log in to your region's inLeague website.

2. Sports Connect Regions: On the left side of the My Account page, click on the 'Volunteer' Tab. inLeague Regions: Select 'Family Profile' on the navigation menu and select the most recent season at the top if you see more than one. See the screen shot below.

👀Please note: If you don't see your volunteer records, you will need to register as a volunteer to do a background check. Here are the instructions: Register as a Volunteer

If you do see a volunteer record, you will need to initiate the Background Check Process.

3. Go to the 'Certification Status' list below your name and volunteer position.

4. Check the box next to 'Risk Status' (Background Check Status).

5. Then, click the button at the bottom, 'Renew and Update'.

6. A pop-up will show to confirm your information that will be sent to Sterling. Make sure you use your FULL LEGAL NAME.

Note: If you need to make changes, please exit the pop-up screen and go to your Settings. Settings can be found on the top right-hand corner as a ⚙️ icon. If your middle name is missing, please visit: Updating Your Middle Name

  1. Make sure you've selected the upcoming (or most recent) season; in the above example, that's Fall 2026 if you were renewing your background check around May or later in 2026.
  2. Under 'Background Check Status', you'll see one of:
    1. Complete: Your background check status is good and not yet eligible for renewal.
    2. Pending Review: You are eligible for a background check, but your league has to review your volunteer application before the check can begin. Contact your Division Commissioner or CVPA for details as different regions have different policies about when background check requests are reviewed.
    3. Begin Background Check: The link to begin your background check is the same one from the email you received (see below). It makes no difference whether you click the link in the email or from inLeague.
    4. Underway: Your background check is in process. This usually takes 24-48 hours.

Your Background Check Invitation Email (All Regions)

Go to your email (the email address on your volunteer form), and find the email sent from TheAdvocates@sterlingvolunteers.com.

Make sure to check your spam email as well.

This is how the email invitation looks:

👀 **If for some reason, you do not get the email, you can go to https://app.sterlingvolunteers.com and log in directly to the website. This is only after you have clicked the "Renew and Update" button on your Sports Connect volunteer page. **

6.     Click the link in the email to go directly to Sterling Volunteers to complete your background check.

7.     Log in if you are a returning volunteer. If you are a new volunteer, please create an account.

8.     Complete the background check process.
